BOFfertjes at Work. What we can learn from children about leadership.

In a world that moves faster and faster, we are searching for ways of working that align with who we truly are. This manifesto is our invitation—a compass for those who want to organize, lead, learn, and collaborate differently. Inspired by the story of the children from the BOFfertjes Factory.

We believe
that people, like children,
are naturally curious, resilient, and resourceful.
That we are not made to get stuck
in boxes, hierarchies, and rigid structures,
but to build something meaningful—together.

We see
how children collaborate without meetings,
lead without power,
make decisions without rules.
They ask for help when things get exciting.
They switch roles when something doesn’t fit.
They celebrate what works, and simply start over when it doesn’t.

We learn
that leadership is not a position, but an attitude.
That work can be light and serious at the same time.
That you don’t have to control everything
to take responsibility.
And that ease is more effective than force.

We build
a world where people are free to be themselves
—while also taking ownership.
Where tasks grow from initiative,
not from job descriptions.
Where teams organize themselves naturally,
because the purpose is clear and trust is strong.

We choose
a way of working that feels natural.
Movement, grounded by anchors.
Openness, decisiveness, and mutual support.
Leading and following, depending on what the situation calls for.

We know
it’s possible.
Because the children of the BOFfertjes Factory
are already doing it—
on an ordinary afternoon,
in an ordinary street.
